Limited Term Staff - Up to 12 month assignment based in Monroe, LA

Posting Period: September 22, 2014 – until filled

Salary:  $49,917

 

This position supports the NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward the promotion of public education by with a strong emphasis on membership and organizing for the Center for Organizing.

 

Position Summary:  The incumbent will work on a specific project mobilizing and engaging NEA members and potential members. The incumbent will partner as assigned with state and local affiliates to implement membership recruitment/retention campaigns.  The incumbent will also engage in routine worksite visits; identifying, recruiting and assisting in developing worksite leaders; as well as collecting, maintaining, and entering field data. The employee uses effective interpersonal skills and an understanding of group/human dynamics to develop and promote organizing/capacity-building strategies. To carry out these responsibilities, the incumbent submits regular reports and uses a personal computer, associated software, and other office automation technology and travels extensively within the area(s) of assignment by various conveyances, including driving a car.

 

Minimum Education Requirement:  Bachelor's degree or equivalent.  Minimum Qualifications: Experience in one or more of the following areas: organizing, strategic planning, crisis management, collective bargaining, public relations, and communications.  Other Requirements: Writing samples (training, facilitation, strategic planning, reports, etc.) may be required at time of interview.  Must be able to work weekends and late evenings. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Selection Criteria: Tier 1 (Essential): Basic field experience as an organizer. Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, and analytical skills. Demonstrated high motivation level and willingness to take risks by experimenting with new techniques to organize. Positive openness toward continual learning and self-development. Demonstrated proficiency using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Demonstrated ability to participate as a professional team member in collaborative activities, including demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with team members and with external partner organizations. Successful references. Tier 2 (Preferred):  Training experience in the basics of organizing. Demonstrated use of data analytic tools to support campaigns. Demonstrated experience and accomplishments in working with leaders, members, and community organizations in member mobilization, member engagement, membership growth (recruitment and retention), problem solving, conflict management, and creative and critical thinking. Demonstrated ability to support NEA and affiliate partnership and coalition efforts with other organizations.

Job Description: The primary function of this position is to assist members with labor management relations. The person selected will demonstrate the ability to organize education employees and possess the leadership abilities necessary to develop comprehensive local association programs aligned with the mission and goals of the Louisiana Association of Educators through the organizing of local affiliates.

The successful candidate will demonstrate and understand the growing changes in the education environment; along with sound judgment; instincts and flexibility. In addition, the individual must be able to work effectively with colleagues, work teams, external work groups and state and local association leaders.


REPORTS TO: Regional Manager/Executive Director

Qualifications (adopted by the LAE Board of Directors)

1.    Successful experience as a certified teacher (master’s degree preferred); or
2.    Successful experience as an educational support professional with evidence of post secondary
degree/diploma/license/certificate or continuing education credits in their field of specialty;
3.    Ability to work independently and self directed;

4.    Effective oral and written communication skills;

5.    Working knowledge of word processing and publisher software applications;

6.    Ability to adapt actions to needs under strenuous and/or adverse circumstances;

7.    Strong interpersonal and social skills to work with a wide range of individuals and personalities;

8.    Advocate for members without passing judgment;

9.    Unselfish dedication to the values, philosophy and mission of the Association;

10.    Can travel and work flexible work days and work weeks as determined by the needs of the association;

 Education:  Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred).

 Environment: General office setting; numerous off-site meetings; occasional out-of-state travel; frequent participation on cross divisional teams and occasionally will be required to act as team leader.

Associate Staff - Organizing and Communications

  
Essential Job Function:

The Associate Staff person will have responsibility in communicating with members, organizing and assisting with training.  Providing support to the LAE staff and managers in the development of organizing projects and materials.

Specific Responsibilities:

Organizing

  1. Assist and coordinate LAE Elections and Credential committee
  2. Collect and review staff  expenditures for  accuracy , and timely submission for processing and submitted voucher before approval for supervisor
  3. Make telephone calls and take messages accurately

Communications & Publishing

  1.  Assist with training staff and members on how to use, develop and maintain web base application and sites.
  2.  Assist communication specialist with  developing , design and preparation of organizing and membership materials, and produce documents and literature materials
  3. Generate an all membership report to be uploaded to the website on a monthly basis.
  4. Ability to proofread, copy edit and create presentations
  5. Perform other appropriate duties as assigned

Minimum High School Diploma or GED; Associate Degree preferred with communications ; Knowledge of Microsoft-Excel, Publisher; PowerPoint and  Word; Knowledge of  web based application and strong  oral and written  communication skills; Knowledge of relevant computer applications, 2-3 years  of organizing and communications skills experience preferred.

Associate Staff- Accounts Payable Clerk

Essential Job Function:

The Associate Staff person will have responsibility in the business and finance department as an account payable clerk processing invoices, check request and other accounting responsibilities using modern accounting principle, software and techniques.

 

Business and Finance

  1. Distribute incoming mail to appropriate personnel
  2. Prepare and mail correspondence as directed
  3. Review invoices and check request to verify compliance with financial policies and procedures
  4. Prepare journal entries accurately and appropriately
  5. Manage accounts payable postings to the general ledger
  6. Monitor accounts to make sure payments are up to date
  7. Reconcile monthly bank statements
  8. Assist with the annual audit
  9. Copy documents and reports as directed
  10. Work cooperatively with fellow staff members
  11. Perform other appropriate duties as assigned

 

Accounts Payable

  1. Prepare and process account payable checks, wire transfers and ACH payments in an accurate and timely manner
  2. Properly classify invoices paid to correct account ledger
  3. Mail payments, with appropriate documentation, to correct vendors
  4. Establish files for all new and current vendors on an annual basis
  5. Assist  in preparation of annual 1099 tax forms and reports as directed
  6. Maintain all vendor  W-9 files
  7. Reconcile vendor invoices with the general ledger
  8. Maintain accounting software accurately and appropriately
  9. Prepare and process daily cash receipts and deposits accurately
  10. Prepare and process local dues disbursement on a monthly basis
  11. Perform other appropriate duties as assigned
