LAE’s Legislative Priorities

LAE will support:

1.  We will support changes to the Teachers Retirement system so all charter schools will participate in TRSL:
     a.   All are public employees
     b.   Assists in attracting long term employees
     c.   Provides long term benefits

2.  LAE will support changes to the manner in which charter schools calculate insurance premiums.
(Our legislation is based upon a study prepared by Richardson from LSU)

3.  LAE will support amendments to the Appropriations bill that will restore funding to schools of academic achievement, restore funding to national certification for guidance counselors and social workers, and fund the $1000 one-time ESP salary supplement.

 4.  LAE will urge lawmakers to reject the Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) due to serious cuts that will trickle down to local school systems.

LAE will oppose:

1.  Consolidation of TRSL with the other state systems.
2.  Legislation that modifies the manner that school boards operate.
3.  Oppose giving sole authority to local school superintendents to hire and fire.
4.  Oppose the bill that requires a two-thirds of the a school board to dismiss a
     Superintendent.
5.  The passage of increasing the homestead exemption or the granting of additional tax
     credits, tax deductions, etc.
6.  The expansion of vouchers.
