Free Professional Development from the Holocaust Museum

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) offers several exciting professional development opportunities at no cost to teachers.

Teachers in the Third Reich: The Roles and Responsibilities of Teachers as Leaders in Society

The history of the Holocaust and the NEA Code of Ethics provide a foundation for examining challenges facing teachers today. This interactive, 90-minute session, led by Museum staff, provokes teachers to look through the lens of Holocaust history to examine their roles and responsibilities.

Appropriate for teachers at all grade levels and curricular areas, as well as for administrators, the program serves as a catalyst for an ongoing conversation about teaching, leadership, and responsibility. The Museum will assist you in planning and scheduling this professional development opportunity for your state or regional meetings.
Conferences, Workshops, and Teacher Forums

Designed for less-experienced secondary teachers and pre-service teachers, these one to three day workshops explore methodologies and rationales for teaching the history of the Holocaust, increase teachers' knowledge of the subject, and examine contemporary issues associated with this history. They are offered throughout the year in Washington, D.C. and at sites around the country.

The Museum Teacher Fellowship Program

This program trains and maintains a corps of experienced secondary school teachers who serve as leaders in Holocaust education both locally and nationally. Teacher Fellows attend a five-day all-expenses paid institute at the USHMM in the summer, and then return to Washington for a three-day follow-up program the following year.
